Synopsis
Bajarí: Gypsy Barcelona offers an intimate look at how flamenco’s legacy is kept alive within Barcelona’s tight-knit Gypsy community.
Juanito is about to fulfill his dream of getting a pair of red boots that will make him a true Flamenco dancer. His uncle Coco, a legendary singer in the flamenco tablaos of Barcelona, will help him achieve it. Flamenco is passed on within the family in the Gypsy community that bore Carmen Amaya, the greatest flamenco dancer of all time. Her grand-niece, Karime, comes to Barcelona to pick up her trail. The journey is only complete when Winy, her mother, joins her from Mexico in order to prepare a show with some of the city’s biggest talent. Together they will discover the spirit of Bajarí, the name of the city of Barcelona in Caló, the language of the Gypsies.
Reviews
"Bajarí: Gypsy Barcelona is a fascinating illustration of the intense effort, natural talent, and dedicated discipline of the musicians and performers that goes into producing a professional flamenco experience. The music interspersed throughout the film makes this documentary extremely entertaining as well as immensely appealing. This film should be recommended viewing for university students interested in the gypsy culture of Spain and the art form of flamenco music." — Dana Ward, Anthropology Review Database
"...an essential documentary." — Suma Flamenca
"Bajarí is a vivid film about how a production is created, about its transmission, about the tension between the old and the new, about one of the worlds that exists within the city...it has to be screened." — Imma Merino, El Punt Avui
"The film portrays the passing down of flamenco from generation to generation, and how the legacy of Carmen Amaya, the most universal Catalan flamenco dancer, translates in the city of Barcelona today." — Malaga Hoy
