Bixa Travesty
(Bixa travesty)
Kiko Goifman, Claudia Priscilla | Documentary
2018 | 75 minutes | Brazil
Linn da Quebrada, a Brazilian transgender singer and artist, presents a powerful and courageous feminist film-discourse on the body and its representation.
Synopsis
The female trans*body becomes a political means of expression in both public and private space. This documentary is about the life of the Brazilian transsexual singer Linn da Quebrada. Coming from an impoverished region of São Paulo, where she has to face many prejudices, among others, for being black. Her funk music sounds like a "gun" against machismo. With a really strong and daring stage presence, she constantly seeks to confront and fight paradigms and stereotypes.
Reviews
"The feature marks an important point in queer cinema, and is certainly deserving of our attention." - Andrew Murray, The Upcoming
"A visceral and fascinating film." - Diego Batlle, Otroscines.com
"Uninterested in making you feel comfortable with the images and ideas they're presenting, and confronts you head on about current issues." - Manuel Betancourt
Remezcla
"Bixa Travesty aka Tranny Fag, is a bold film about the unabashed MC Linn da Quebrada, a transgender performer, as well as her friends and family. The concert scenes are fantastic, and da Quebrada's charisma extends off-stage as well." -
Gary M. Kramer, Gay City News
"Time spent with Linn is certainly eventful." - David Jenkins, Little White Lies
