Dicing with Death, Ep. 02 - Peru: Vertigo in the Andes
(Peru: Vertigo in the Andes)
Frédéric Elhorga, Antonin Marcel | Documentary, Series
2018 | 52 minutes | France
Incan gods warned the population against the dangerous paths of the Andes. In spite of the risks, Peruvian drivers are travelling through this deadly mountain range on a weekly basis.
Synopsis
From the north to the south of Peru, deep canyons carve through the Andes cordillera. Those needing to supply their gold mines, tend to their vineyards, or simply regain access to their villages have no choice but to traverse the most improbable of roads, hewn from solid rock. Major companies have established their bases at the road's end, drawn by the nation's abundant natural resources, whether hidden beneath the earth's surface, rich with precious metals, or thriving within its fish-filled waters. However, this wealth seldom reaches the unskilled laborers, the men and women who toil in the depths of the tunnels, tirelessly digging into the earth amidst clouds of ammonia, or risking their lives suspended from a 200-foot rope for a mere handful of euros. This impossible road takes us from the Maranon River valley to the Cotahuasi canyon, passing through the Paracas desert, as it leads us on a journey through the magnificent landscapes of Peru, where life carries a steep price.
