Sebastián Moro, the Walker
(Sebastián Moro, el caminante)
María Laura Cali | Documentary
2023 | 95 minutes | Argentina, Bolivia
A documentary on journalist Sebastián Moro, who exposed Bolivia’s 2019 coup and became one of its first victims, revealing the cost of press freedom.
Synopsis
Sebastián Moro, The Walker, directed by María Laura Cali, is a compelling documentary that reconstructs the life, journalistic work, and tragic death of Argentine journalist Sebastián Moro. In November 2019, amid escalating political unrest in Bolivia, Moro—editor of Rural Press and a correspondent based in La Paz—became one of the first journalists to alert the international community to the coup d’état that overthrew democratically elected President Evo Morales.
On the night of November 2019, Moro went out for a walk in La Paz, unaware it would be his last. He was later found brutally beaten, dying days later at the age of 40, becoming one of the first victims of the coup, allegedly murdered by paramilitary groups linked to the overthrow. Through Sebastián Moro’s own voice—recovered from WhatsApp audio messages, radio broadcasts, emails, and personal archives—the film retraces his final days and the circumstances surrounding his death.
