Commoners
(Comuneros)
Pablo García Sanz | Documentary
2022 | 84 minutes | Spain
An account of the revolutionary events in the Kingdom of Castile (1516–1522) and their lasting influence on history.
Synopsis
This documentary examines the War of the Communities of Castile (1520–1522), a pivotal uprising against the rule of Charles I of Spain (later Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor), and its enduring impact on European political history. In the early 16th century, the Kingdom of Castile stood among the most powerful realms in Europe, yet tensions between royal authority and local governance sparked a widespread rebellion known as the Comunero Revolt.
Central to the film is the Battle of Villalar on April 23, 1521, a decisive moment that marked the defeat of the Comuneros and the suppression of a movement some historians regard as one of the earliest expressions of modern revolutionary thought. Through historical analysis, the documentary explores the motivations behind the rebellion, the political ideals advanced by leaders such as Juan de Padilla, Juan Bravo, and Francisco Maldonado, and the alternative model of governance they envisioned.
