(Corrosão)
Eugenio Puppo, Cédric Fanti, Hugo Leonardo | Documentary

2022 | 26 minutes | Brazil

Despite justice system upheavals, Brazil faces deep distortions and historic injustices amid democracy's gradual weakening.

Synopsis

In light of the gradual weakening of Brazilian democracy, the upheavals caused by the justice system in recent years already seem distant. Beyond the politicization of justice, there are still deep distortions and problems that echo the injustices of our history.

Series Description

Republic of Judges presents an overview of key events in Brazilian politics, including the promulgation of the 1988 Constitution, the Mensalão trial, and Operation Lava-Jato, to explore the growing role of the Judiciary in the country’s current power structure.

Each of the five episodes focuses on a different aspect of the Judiciary, examining the increasing influence of judges and prosecutors across various levels of the justice system.

Joaquim Barbosa, Rodrigo Janot, Deltan Dallagnol, and Sérgio Moro appear as central figures in this process. However, the series goes beyond individual personalities, identifying structural issues within the Judiciary that contribute to the system’s persistent dysfunctions.

Reviews

“They do not overthrow the powerful with weapons or battles, but with pens, sentences, and in coordination with the Public Ministry.” – Matheus Trunk, Ponte Journalismo

“The series presents an overview of some key events in Brazilian politics—such as the enactment of the 1988 Constitution, the Mensalão trial, and Operation Car Wash—to address the phenomenon of the judiciary's growing participation in the current configuration of power in the country.” – Tela Viva
