The Coup d'État Factory
(A fantástica fábrica de golpes)
Victor Fraga, Valnei Nunes | Documentary
2020 | 106 minutes | Brazil
Brazil's long tradition of coup d'états is possible through the support of big media. Two Brazilian journalists reveal the manipulative tactics used.
Synopsis
The Coup d'État Factory is a powerful documentary that uncovers Brazil’s long history of coup d'états, which wouldn't be possible without the active support of the country’s major media outlets, particularly TV Globo. Directed by two London-based Brazilian journalists, the film explores the tactics these organizations have used to shape public opinion, legitimize authoritarianism, and undermine democracy.
Through exclusive footage and interviews with key figures such as former President Dilma Rousseff, Pulitzer Prize winner Glenn Greenwald, and Nobel laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivel, the film captures the collapse of Brazilian democracy following the 2016 parliamentary coup and Lula's subsequent imprisonment.
By using Brazil as a case study, the documentary emphasizes the urgent need for media regulation worldwide, demonstrating the vital role of balanced journalism in preserving democracy.
Reviews

“British documentary maker returns to the subject 25 years later: Globo, ‘The Coup d'État Factory’.” - Viomundo
