Shout at Me!
(¿Me vas a gritar?)
Laura Herrero Garvín | Documentary
2018 | 12 minutes | Mexico
Society's violence against women are a heavy burden that Melissa must lift everyday. When she gets in the ring, she’s the one answering back.
Synopsis
In a society laden with violence and harsh judgments, Melissa grapples with the weight of societal expectations and gender norms. As a young Mexican university student, she defies convention by engaging in an activity traditionally viewed as the domain of men. In both her daily life and within the confines of the ring, she confronts relentless demands, harassment, and guilt imposed by a macho society.
Despite pervasive challenges, Melissa refuses to be silenced. With unwavering determination, she harnesses her strength and courage. In the face of adversity, Melissa boldly declares, "Come on, shout at me! So what?"
Her story offers a poignant reflection on the resilience of women navigating hostile environments and the enduring power of self-expression in the face of oppression. This film serves as a compelling tool for educators seeking to engage students in discussions about gender inequality, societal expectations, and the transformative potential of resistance and empowerment.
