A story that changes one's perspective on life and death. The unexpected friendship between ALS patient Fernando and palliative care physician Enric.
Synopsis
There Is a Door, There chronicles the nine‑month Zoom relationship between Fernando Sureda, a terminal ALS patient and former director of Uruguay’s Football Association, and Dr. Enric Benito, a Spanish palliative‑care specialist.
As Fernando pursues euthanasia in Uruguay, the film navigates themes of autonomy, grief, intercontinental solidarity, and the ethics of dying; while aloso exploring the acceptance of pain, humor, family and friends, ideas and beliefs.
Constructed from eleven hours of video chats, emails, and voice messages, the documentary reveals how humor, compassion, and existential reflection reshape both men’s understanding of life and death. A pivotal contribution to scholarship in end‑of‑life ethics, digital intimacy, and Latin American documentary cinema.
