HOME - The Country of Illusion

(Home - El país de la ilusión)
Josephine Landertinger Forero | Documentary

2016 | 85 minutes | Colombia, Portugal

Lilia hasn't visited her birthplace, Colombia, in 40 years. After living in eight countries, her daughter is curious about her mother's homeland.

Synopsis

Lilia hasn't visited her birthplace, Colombia, in 40 years. After living in eight countries, she has settled in Portugal. Armed with a camera, her daughter Josephine wants to explore what home means to her mother.

The filmmaker's questions challenge Lilia to define her identity. As a nomadic character, she struggles to find peace with her own life and make sense of her decisions. The film portrays the life of an uprooted person, whose identity straddles multiple worlds in a country of illusion.

The film sparks a universal dialogue between mother and daughter about migration, roots, and a sense of belonging.

Reviews

"With an enjoyable subtlety, the film ends up becoming a melancholic portrait of loneliness, identity and an essay on memory, which is an interesting choice given that Lilia, the main character, constantly reminiscing about her past, now takes care of an old woman who is losing it because of Alzheimer's." — Cineuropa
"Thanks to a humble subtleness, 'Home' turns into an essay about memory and HELPS TO reflect on the sense of belonging." — Vitor Pinto, Cineuropa
