2023 | 24 minutes | Argentina
A military leader, Manuel Dorrego was a prominent Federalist. His execution intensified Argentina's civil conflicts between Federalists and Unitarians.
Synopsis
Manuel Dorrego (1787–1828) was an Argentine military leader, statesman, and prominent Federalist. Born in Buenos Aires, he fought in key battles during Argentina's independence struggle and later became a vocal advocate for federalism, opposing centralist policies. Twice serving as governor of Buenos Aires (1820 and 1827–1828), he ended the Argentine-Brazilian War by accepting Uruguay's independence, a decision that fueled political tensions.
In December 1828, Dorrego was overthrown in a coup led by Unitarian General Juan Lavalle. Captured after attempting to organize resistance, he was executed by firing squad, becoming a martyr for the Federalist cause. His death intensified Argentina's civil conflicts between Federalists and Unitarians.
