Magnicides, Ep. 01 -Tupac Amaru
Luz López Mañé, Inti Nieto | Documentary, Series
2023 | 29 minutes | Argentina
Tupac Amaru sought peace with Spanish authorities amid abuses against Indians, but his execution failed to end the rebellion he inspired.
Synopsis
Túpac Amaru II, born José Gabriel Condorcanqui around 1742 in Peru, was an Indigenous cacique and revolutionary leader who led a major uprising against Spanish colonial rule from 1780 to 1781. Claiming descent from the last Inca ruler, Túpac Amaru I, he sought to abolish oppressive colonial practices like forced labor (mita) and restore Indigenous autonomy. His rebellion began with the execution of a Spanish official and quickly spread across southern Peru, uniting Indigenous peoples and mestizos in a fight against exploitation.
Captured in 1781, Túpac Amaru II was brutally executed in Cusco, along with his wife, Micaela Bastidas, who had been a key figure in the movement. Though his uprising failed, it became a symbol of resistance against colonial oppression and inspired future independence movements across Latin America. He is remembered as a hero of Indigenous rights and a pivotal figure in Peruvian history.
