Magnicides, Ep. 04 - Emiliano Zapata
Luz López Mañé, Inti Nieto | Documentary, Series
2023 | 30 minutes | Argentina
A key leader of the Mexican Revolution, Emiliano Zapata symbolized peasant resistance but was betrayed and assassinated, ending the uprising.
Synopsis
Symbol of the peasant resistance, Emiliano Zapata (August 8, 1879 – April 10, 1919) was a key leader of the Mexican Revolution and a champion of land reform. Born in Anenecuilco, Morelos, he grew up as a mestizo peasant and became a vocal opponent of the hacienda system that exploited rural communities. Zapata led the Liberation Army of the South and authored the Plan de Ayala in 1911, which called for redistributing land to peasants. His efforts helped inspire the inclusion of land reform in Mexico's 1917 Constitution.
Zapata's revolutionary activities included guerrilla warfare against various regimes, including those of Porfirio Díaz, Francisco Madero, and Venustiano Carranza. Despite his military setbacks, he remained a symbol of resistance for rural workers. Zapata was ambushed and assassinated in 1919 by Carranza's forces but remains an enduring icon of agrarian justice and Indigenous rights in Mexico.
